Falkland Islands Featured on Planned Sovereignty Referendum Issue

Falkland Islands 2013-02-15

Falkland Islands 2013-02-15 (planned)

To mark the upcoming sovereignty referendum on March 10-11, 2013, the Falkland Islands Philatelic Bureau plans to issue a set of four single stamps and a mini-sheet. The for single stamps, are planned in denomina-tions of 3p, 40p, 75p and £1.76. The denomination of the single stamp mini-sheet is £3.00.  The stamps and mini-sheet share a common theme showing the islands, with a hand holding a ballot paper, being submitted into a ballot box, with the opening of the box near Falkland Sound, between the two islands. A satellite image of the islands appears to have been used, possibly with alternate band combinations, to match the multi-colored backgrounds of the oceans and text on the stamps.  On the mini-sheet, the question of the referendum, “Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?” is shown in the lower right hand corner. In the upper left of the mini-sheet is the quote “a people’s right to self determination is a fundamental modern democratic right” appears to be from a statement given by R. Edwards, a member of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly, in a statement given to the United Nations Committee of 24 (Special committee on Decolonization) June 14, 2012.

TNCP 40 Dispatched to Members

TNCP 40, January 2013

The 40th issue of The New CartoPhilatelist was dispatched to members in early January 2013. The issue opens the year with twenty full pages of fascinating articles, images and information about the Society.

TNCP 40 begins with an in-depth article by Society member Roger Kirby, about the connection of lighthouses and maps on stamps and examines, how over this years, this combination has been changing.  The next article is the final installment of member James Hamilton’s comprehensive series about Captain James Cook and CartoPhilately, and presents a myriad of cartophilatelic examples relating to Captain Cook’s Third Voyage.  Society member Pierre Moise provides some background and details about a 2012 issue by local Greenland artists depicting the islands of Denmark covered by thick glaciers, much like on the island of Greenland.  In the next article, European Representative Volker Woesner continues his series on survey related themes on map stamps, this time examining how mapping datums are shown.  Society President David Wolfersberger presents news about the society along with a detailed recap of the 5th Meeting of the CartoPhilatelic Society that took place in NYC in October 2012. There is a lot of information covered, and details about the forth-coming election of officers, so please be sure to check this carefully. Vice president Mark Honig tells us about series of interesting map images found in the gutters of a number of Caribbean issues marking the 21st birthday of Princess Diana.  At the auctions, by past president, Miklos Pinther, looks at some interesting results of recent auctions, including the  sale of Professor Litchfield’s collection, who passed away last year. Issue 40 is rounded out with a series of new issue images and updates to the Maps on Stamps checklist.

“Maps on Stamps” a New Detailed Introductory Article

"Maps on Stamps" an introductory article by Mark HonigEarlier in the spring of 2012, Mark Honig, our Society’s then vice-president wrote an introductory article entitled “Landkaarten op postzegels” that appeared in the April 2012 issue of the Dutch philatelic magazine “Thema,” published by NEDERLANDSE VERENIGING VOOR THEMATISCHE FILATELIE (NVTF) [The Dutch Society for Thematic Philately]. NVTF is the only general thematic philatelic society in the Netherlands with over 800 members.

NVTF has graciously allowed Mark to produce a revised translation of the original version of the article and we are very happy to offer it here, for download: Maps on Stamps Introduction Article 2012 . You wont want to miss this detailed and colorful introduction to the various categories that await the new carto-philatelic collector. [The Carto-Philatelic Society wishes to thank NVTF for allowing this article to be translated and reach a wider audience. ]
